The RES SUCCESS day service model helps students replace disruptive
behaviors with safer, more appropriate behaviors in order to get their
legitimate needs met. The goal of the behavior modification model is
to reduce the frequency, duration, and intensity of maladaptive behaviors.
This is accomplished through the following curricula:
Expressive Arts: Expressive arts include exposure to
and participation in music, arts, crafts and dance. Individual instructors
coordinate activities and therapeutic sessions in each area of expressive
arts.
Education: An educational curriculum is developed
for each student based on a thorough assessment of the student’s
knowledge and abilities. Education is taught in many formats, including:
observational learning, auditory and visual demonstration, tactile
stimulation, educational games, group and independent assignments,
and more. The curriculum includes reading, writing, math, social studies,
geography, science, problem solving, and tactile activities such as:
puzzle activities, motor skill exercises, and manipulatives.
Community Integration: Students are introduced to community
facilities and services. They receive training on how to use community
resources, such as taking public transportation or going to the library,
and are encouraged to increase their level of independence in using
these resources.
Vocational Training: A variety of employment opportunities
are available, including: contract on-site work, work “enclaves”
(groups) both off and on-site, and supported employment in non-sheltered
settings.
Communication: Students learn concrete communication
skills, such as sign language, writing, comprehension, verbal enunciation
and the expression of needs and emotions.
Individual and Group Therapeutic Support (Social Skills):
RES SUCCESS conducts an interpersonal group on a monthly basis. Facilitated
by the behavior analyst, individuals attending this group are encouraged
to expressively communicate with one another. Other group members assist
with problem-solving and helping them communicate emotions more effectively.
Activities of Daily Living (ADL): A small group of
clients have goals relating to activities of daily living. These goals
consist of maintaining adequate hygiene, brushing teeth, etc.
